A.G Smith are one of the oldest surving businesses in maldon. Like most Funeral Directors A.G Smith can trace its roots back to the building industry. It was traditional for building companies to offer a funeral service utilising their skilled craftsmen.

David Smith moved to Maldon from Witham in 1890 and set up a cabinet making business in Beeleigh Road. It was his son Arthur George Smith who continued the family tradition after his father’s death in 1908.

Arthur George Smith set up business as a builder and undertaker at 17 Spital Road in 1912. The business flourished and was moved to a larger house at 14 Spital Road and finally the short trip across Spital Road to our present premises at No. 7 un the 1940’s. Arthur George died in 1946 and is buried with his wife and eldest son in Maldon Cemetry. His younger son, Arthur William continued with the business until his own death in 1952.

Families from Maldon and the outlying villages of Dengie peninsular have trusted the care of their loved ones to A.G Smith for over 100 years and we are proud of the fact that we are one of the oldest business in Maldon.

The company is still run by local people providing 24 hour care to the local community. In year 2000 we opened our sister branch at Hallmark House, 44 Station Road, Southminster.

Testimonials

Mr A – Great Totham

Thank you for the way that A.G. Smith conducted the funeral of my wife. From the initial meeting that I had with Jack, through to the ceremony with Julian it was perfect. You supplied exactly what my wife wanted and all who attended agreed that it was superbly carried out. At our first meeting you explained all the options and supplied the funeral we wanted at a very reasonable cost, you saved me a lot of stress and worry.
